Creative Arts and Design Research Project

The aim of this module is to develop a strong research-driven approach to creative practice through critical thinking, analysis, and academic writing. Students are required to explore a chosen topic in depth, using qualitative research methods to investigate ideas, concepts, and contemporary perspectives within creative arts and design. The project focuses on translating research findings into a well-structured and visually supported dissertation that reflects both theoretical understanding and creative insight.

SEEING IS NO LONGER BELIEVING: A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF TRUST IN AI-GENERATED PHOTOGRAPHS

The developments in artificial intelligence have led to a significant evolution in the creation of digital images, thus posing new issues regarding the degree to which the content seen in them can be trusted. The research, referred to as "Seeing Is No Longer Believing: A Qualitative Study of Trust in AI-Generated Photographs," aims at exploring the way in which artificial intelligence-generated images affect the traditional notions of trust in photography. In this study, a qualitative approach is adopted, utilizing comparative visual analysis for detecting the distinctions between the authentic images and those generated by artificial intelligence. Four categories will be explored: human (girl), animal (cat), car, and perfume product. From the results obtained, it can be seen that there is little or no difference between real images and those created by artificial intelligence. However, upon close examination, one notices slight differences in terms of texture, illumination, and even minuscule details. Natural photos will always appear to be slightly imperfect, unlike the AI photos which seem to be perfectly polished. As such, relying on how life-like an image appears is not a good way of determining its authenticity. The research indicates declining levels of trust in images in the digital era.
